Announcing the publication of the companion book to “Make a Joyful Noise: A Brief History of Gospel Music Ministry in America 2011”.
“Anointed to Sing the Gospel: The Levitical Legacy of Thomas A. Dorsey” is scheduled for a release date of June 17, 2015. It continues the legacy of Thomas Dorsey to gospel music after he “crossed” back into the sacred from the secular music genre. He was widely criticized for bringing ‘worldy tempos and chords’ into sacred music. It explores the tension and dilemma of 21st century gospel artists, musicians, composers, and pastors to keep the sacredness of the sung gospel in an increasingly secular worldview that fuses sacred and secular into one sound.(cover photo courtesy of George Nierenberg).
Viv Broughton expresses the significance of Thomas Dorsey with these words. “Thomas A. Dorsey is the grand old man of gospel music. No one has had a greater influence on gospel singing; no one has been quite as prophetic; no one spans the entire history of gospel music quite like Dorsey. More than any other individual, Thomas A. Dorsey is gospel and his story is the story of gospel”.
